“Whimsy” is a stylized and playfully constructed feature-length documentary about the life and work of Seattle’s mercurial playwright, Scot Augustson. His shadow puppet theater is bawdy, whimsical and irreverent with a sense of heart. Whimsy draws the viewer into Scot’s imaginative world, where they discover that self-doubt, loneliness and regret are his constant companions. Whimsy documents the production of Scot’s shadow puppet creation “Shadow Odyssey,” which was directed by BPAC Executive Director Jennifer Jasper, a long-time friend of Scot’s, who is also featured in the film. It’s described as “where the river Styx meets Route 66”, a hilarious adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey performed in a circus tent. By blending elements of magical realism and fiction, the documentary relies on non-traditional storytelling to evoke curiosity and create an atmosphere of spectacle.
The film offers a peek into Jasper’s theatrical background before relocating to Bennington in 2017. She is excited to invite the community back into the theater space for this special event.
Run-time is 45 minutes with a talk back via ZOOM hosted by Jennifer Jasper with both Scot Augustson and filmmaker Cory Kelley following the screening.
Seating is limited to 46 people.
The bar will be closed and seating will be immediate upon arrival. Masks are mandatory, with temperature checks upon entry.
